Swimming State Finals 2011

  • February 25, 2012

IUPUI Natatorium during early practicesSwimming is not a sport I normally shoot. Until this season, I have never shot one. But I’m here shooting the IHSAA State Swimming Championship at the IUPUI Natatorium. A few of the crew came in Thursday to cable the Natatorium for 5 cameras + 1 internal camera that is fixed on the diving boards.

My camera position at start of raceSwimming Final Video

I’m working camera 4, down on the floor. My job is to pick up the start of the race, tight shots during the race, award ceremonies and interviews with the winner(s), and of course, picking up color shots.

Ian at camera position 3It was a long shoot, almost 4 hours. Our crew call was 7am, but the meet didn’t start until 1pm. Once we got our cameras up, we had over 4 hours with nothing to do. But we still get payed for doing nothing.

Diving is boring! But some of the swimming matches were worth Announcer's Position high up in the rafterswatching. The team race went down to the final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay with Carmel owning a 11.5 point lead over Bloomington South. Carmel won their third consecutive team title by a 246.5 to 245 margin.

Breakdown was quick, even though there were a lot of long cable runs. Our cars had parking tickets on them, but the production manager will take care of those. A 10 hour work day, buy all in all, it will be a good pay day.

February’s FCPUG Meeting

  • February 23, 2012

Fox59 News StationTonight I went to the February meeting of the Indianapolis Final Cut Pro User Group which was held at the Fox59 news station. I’ve missed the last 2 monthly meetings because of jobs that I had to shoot.

FCPUGAt this meeting we got a look at the 10.0.3 updated release of Final Cut Pro X. New improvements were added such as better scopes, advanced controls in the Keyer effect, new keyframing behaviors, relinking media and color board updates. Also Mikey Bouchereau gave as a review of the Multicam and broadcast monitor support features that are new to the 10.0.3 release.

All in all FCP X is beginning to look better and better as a professional editor platform. I guess that sooner or later, I’m going to have to buy it. But I think that I will buy Motion 5 first.

Inside Indy

  • February 23, 2012

Inside Indy StudioOver the last couple of weeks, I’ve been shooting the last of the regular season high school basketball games which will finish up with Tipton tomorrow evening.

Basketball sectionals begin next week, but I’ll also be working other events such as the 2011 IHSAA Boys Swimming/Diving Championship all day this Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Inside Indy Camera 3 PositionNext month I’ve lined up some Pacers games, and maybe, keeping my fingers crossed, a Big 10 basketball game. But most of my time has been taken up by studio work, like “Inside Indy” a local talk show.

Bishop Chatard @ Indianapolis Tech

TV40 Sports Production TruckIt’s the Bishop Chatard Trojans vs the Indianapolis Tech Titans.

I’m shooting for TV40 Sports again tonight and it has been awhile since I have shot for them.

Switcher and ScreensThe only difference between 40 and Producer Plus is that 40 has a slightly larger production. Their production truck is bigger and so are their cameras. Which is not always a good thing. I had gotten use to the smaller, lighter cameras that Producer Plus has.

It’s a good thing that I shot with some larger cameras for the Superbowl Village work that I did last week. It got my shoulder ready for this shoot, and the others that I will have with 40 this month and next.

SBV Feb 5th – Superbowl Sunday

Early Riser - and Wait!

It’s an 8:30 am crew call. The Pacer’s parking garage normally charges us $4 for parking. But it’s Superbowl Day and the garage is now charging $99. Which is cheap, compared to the parking lot down the street which is charging $200.

We all got there early to ensure that we could find parking space. I parked in the ESG Security parking lot at 11th and Capital and I took their shuttle in. Other crew members found free parking on the street. But we all got there so early that we beat the people with the keys to the control rooms. So we all ended up sitting on the floor, waiting.

There are only 3 schedule shows to shoot, plus one extra show that was cancelled from Friday’s overcrowding. All of them were on the Pepsi Stage. Easy shoots. A easy day.

Once the shows were done we packed in the cameras and tripods. Early in the morning we pulled all our cable from the Verizon stage. But in the end, the problem proved to be the Pepsi Stage. There were so many people out trying to enjoy the last day of Superbowl events, it would be dangerous trying to pull cable with a lot of people walking over them.

So we had to wait for the Superbowl Host Committee to make a decision. And we waited. And waited. And finally they asked for a volunteer to stay and help pull cable later in the day.

Hershel volunteered, or was he Volunteered! Anyhow, I was out of there by 4p.

Last long day and it rained all day. But thankfully, the day went by quickly.

Once again, I didn’t have to shoot the last Verizon show, which was O.A.R.. That means that I had time to use my own equipment to shoot some stills and video of the show.

Superbowl Village Friday Feb 3nd – Overcrowding

8p – As I stand here on the Pepsi Stage waiting to shoot my 8:30p show, all I can see from the stage is wall to wall people. This is unreal!

I’m not all that sure that there will be a show. The talent can’t get to the stage. Our cameras can’t get here. Nobody can move!

9:43p – The last Pepsi show was finally cancelled. Larry did make it to the stage with 2 cameras. What should have been a 5 minute walk took him a half hour.

Of course, with the show cancelled we had to walk both cameras back. We took a round-about route. Two blocks north, 2 blocks east, and then down to the Pacer stadium.

20120204-070628.jpg

We had to secure the tripods at the stage because there was no way we would make it back with 2 cameras and 2 tripods with one of them on a dolly.

I was exhausted!
I watched the final show at the Verizon stage from the control room.
